Pictures?

Nope, no pictures yet. We are currently in the city of Husum. The library has internet but no way to upload photos. Soon enough though. Thanks Mark for the English keyboard tip. Vier dank.

So, we had a great dinner in Brunesbuttle on 6/30 and the owner gave us shots and lit us a "love candle". He even gave us a BBQ apron. I doubt it survives the trip. He was the second guy to say, "Ohhh, you come from Obama!?" They freaking love that guy over here. My bike spoke was an easy fix and we headed off towards Busum on 7/1. More sheep, cows and dykes until we came to the spot where the Elbe river meets the North Sea. There was a great play area for kids with trampolines and zip lines. We were too tired so we just flew the kite and laid on the grass. Camping is cheaper than the hotel. And we slept better.

In Busum the following morning (7/2) we went out for breakfast since this was supposedly our rest day. Classic German breakfast with rolls and jam and salami and cheese. Sehr gut, but I miss eggs, ham and hashbrowns. We began to leave and the waitress started speaking German to us and making crazy hand gestures. I thought I had insulted her by not eating the pickle, but it turned out Shannon forgot to pay. It was all Shannon's fault. It was so hot that we decided it would probably just be better to hop on the bikes to get some wind. Good choice. We made it to St. Peter-Ording - a vacation spot like the Oregon Coast. Lots of kites, sand dunes, and naked retired people. I was ready for topless, but not full on swinging in the breeze. I hope some day I can be that comfortable, but for now it's shorts on for me.

One gentleman was particularly impressive. He even stopped to gawk at me as I stretched on the beach. I'm glad he didn't join me.

Today, we had big plans of riding 100+ km, but now we're faced with camping 7km up the road or traveling 55km to the next campsite. We met a nice older couple bike touring and they are staying here, so we may just call it a day. It's hot - probably pushing 90.

Anyways, no more problems with our bikes and we're just cruising along. We will get pictures up as soon as we can. We had a CD made so it shouldn't be too hard. I published a gear inventory a few posts down from an earlier draft in case you're interested.

Tschüß!

  2. It sounds like you two are having a real experience. Even w/ all the bike related problems, you sound like you are having a blast. Guess someone should have warned you about the European "nude" beaches. Probably not the only one you'll find. Dad and I are really enjoying reading your journal. Bella is curled up w/ me on the couch. Have fun. MOM
